Data Analyst in Morocco: Salary, Skills and a 6–12 Month Roadmap

What a data analyst actually does in a Moroccan company, which skills get you hired, what salaries look like as indicative ranges, and a realistic roadmap to land a first position.

Data Analyst in Morocco: Salary, Skills and a 6–12 Month Roadmap

What does a data analyst do in Morocco?

A data analyst collects, cleans and analyses company data to answer business questions, then presents the results as reports and dashboards. In Morocco, most data analysts work with SQL, Excel and Power BI, sometimes Python, and spend much of their time with finance, sales, marketing or operations teams. The role is hired across banks, telecoms, retail, insurance, consulting firms and offshoring centres, mostly in Casablanca and Rabat.

A typical week looks like this:

  • Writing SQL queries to extract data from a database or data warehouse.
  • Cleaning files coming from an ERP, a CRM or Excel exports.
  • Building and maintaining dashboards (Power BI is the most frequent tool in job offers, followed by Tableau, Qlik and Looker Studio).
  • Defining and checking KPIs with business teams (what makes a good KPI).
  • Answering ad-hoc questions: "Why did sales drop in Marrakech last month?"
  • Presenting findings, often in French, sometimes in English, to non-technical managers.

Data analyst, data scientist or data engineer: what is the difference?

RoleMain questionTypical toolsOutput
Data analystWhat happened and why?SQL, Excel, Power BI, Python (pandas)Dashboards, reports, analyses
Data scientistWhat will happen?Python, scikit-learn, statisticsPredictive models, experiments
Data engineerHow do we get reliable data to everyone?SQL, Python, ETL tools, cloud, SparkPipelines, data warehouses
BI developerHow do we industrialise reporting?Power BI, DAX, SQL, data modellingData models, report catalogues

In smaller Moroccan companies, one person often covers several of these roles. If building pipelines interests you more than analysis, read the data engineer role and roadmap.

Which skills do employers ask for?

Reading data analyst job offers in Morocco, the same skills come back again and again:

Technical skills

  • SQL: joins, aggregations, CTEs and window functions. It is tested in almost every technical interview. A practical set of queries is in SQL queries for data analysis.
  • Excel: pivot tables, lookups (XLOOKUP / INDEX-MATCH), Power Query. Many teams still live in Excel.
  • Power BI: Power Query, data modelling (star schema), DAX measures, publishing and sharing. The PL-300 certification is a common way to prove it.
  • Python (a strong plus): pandas for cleaning, Matplotlib or Seaborn for charts, notebooks for exploration.
  • Statistics basics: averages vs medians, distributions, correlation, sampling, A/B test logic.

Business and soft skills

  • Understanding the business: margin, churn, stock, receivables.
  • Turning a vague request into a precise question.
  • Clear communication in French and English; Arabic or Darija is often useful with field teams.
  • Rigour: checking totals against the source before sharing a number.

How much does a data analyst earn in Morocco?

There is no reliable public salary survey we can point to for this role, so treat the ranges below as indicative orders of magnitude gathered from the general market, not as official figures. They are gross monthly salaries in MAD and vary a lot by company, city, sector and experience.

LevelExperienceIndicative gross monthly range (MAD)
Junior0–2 yearsabout 6,000 – 11,000
Mid-level2–5 yearsabout 11,000 – 18,000
Senior / lead5+ yearsabout 18,000 – 30,000, sometimes more

Net salary is lower than gross after social contributions and income tax. Always compare offers on the same basis (gross or net, 12 or 13 months, bonuses, health insurance).

What moves the salary up or down?

  • Company type: multinationals, banks and large consulting firms usually pay more than small local companies.
  • City: Casablanca and Rabat concentrate most offers and the higher ranges.
  • Sector: banking, insurance, telecom and offshoring tend to pay more than retail SMEs or associations.
  • Tool stack: SQL plus Power BI plus Python is worth more than Excel alone; cloud experience (Azure, GCP) adds value.
  • Languages: fluent English opens offshoring roles and remote work for foreign companies, which can pay above local ranges.
  • Education and proof: an engineering or master's degree helps at entry level; after a few years, a portfolio and real results count more.
  • Scope: leading a BI team, owning a reporting platform or working directly with executives moves you to the upper range.

The best way to calibrate is to look at offers that display a salary range on job boards, and to ask the range early in the recruitment process.

Where do Moroccan employers post data analyst jobs?

  • LinkedIn: the main channel for banks, multinationals and consulting firms. Set your location to Casablanca or Rabat and turn on job alerts.
  • ReKrute: a major Moroccan job board, with many offers from large companies and recruitment agencies.
  • Emploi.ma: another widely used Moroccan job board, useful for a broader range of companies.
  • Company career pages: banks, telecom operators, large industrial groups and consulting firms often publish openings on their own sites first.
  • Internship offers (PFE): for students, an end-of-studies internship is the most common entry door; many convert into a first contract.

Recruiters also read portfolios. A short page with two or three real projects is often more convincing than a list of certificates. See what recruiters can expect on the recruiters page.

A 6–12 month roadmap to become a data analyst

This plan assumes about 10–15 hours per week. Go faster if you study full time, slower if you work in parallel.

PeriodFocusConcrete deliverable
Months 1–2Excel advanced + SQL fundamentals (SELECT, WHERE, GROUP BY, JOIN)30 solved SQL exercises on a public dataset
Months 3–4SQL intermediate (CTEs, window functions) + statistics basicsAn analysis notebook answering 5 business questions
Months 4–6Power BI: Power Query, star schema, DAX, publishingOne complete sales or HR dashboard with 5–8 KPIs
Months 6–8Python for analysis: pandas, charts, cleaning messy filesA cleaning + analysis project on a real, messy dataset
Months 8–10Business case and storytelling; optional PL-300 certificationA written case study: problem, data, method, recommendations
Months 10–12Portfolio, CV, LinkedIn, applications and interview practice3 portfolio projects online, targeted applications every week

Portfolio project ideas with a Moroccan angle

  • Sales dashboard for a fictional retailer with stores in several Moroccan cities, with targets in MAD.
  • Analysis of public open data (for example from the Moroccan open-data portal or international sources) on a topic you care about.
  • A KPI dashboard for a small business you know: a shop, a school, a family business, with its permission and anonymised data.

Real projects follow the same pattern. The CNSS decision-support project went from heterogeneous files to a star-schema warehouse and dashboards filtered by period, region and category, which is exactly the type of work junior analysts are asked about in interviews.

How do you pass a data analyst interview?

  • SQL test: expect joins, GROUP BY, a window function and a question on NULLs.
  • Case study: a dataset and two hours to produce insights; show your reasoning, not just charts.
  • Power BI questions: star schema, difference between a measure and a calculated column, CALCULATE.
  • Business questions: "Revenue went down 10 % — how do you investigate?" Answer with a structure: check the data, split by dimension, compare periods, form hypotheses.

Conclusion

The data analyst role is one of the most accessible entry points into data careers in Morocco. Employers look for solid SQL, Power BI and Excel, some Python, and the ability to explain numbers to business teams. Salaries vary widely, so compare offers carefully. A focused 6–12 month plan with three good portfolio projects is a realistic path to a first job.
